What to Carry When You Conceal Carry

A concealed carry firearm is just one tool in a broader self-defense strategy. When concealed carrying, it’s crucial to focus on safety, comfort, and concealment. If you plan to carry on a daily basis, as is recommended – criminals get to pick the times and locations for a crime, not you – it can be helpful to use a checklist when leaving the house.

Checklist for Virginia Concealed Carry Holders

Every time you conceal carry in public, you should be prepared with the following essentials.

  • Well-fitted holster, along with a spare magazine
  • Proper attire, including layered clothing and shirts that don’t cling to your firearm
  • Weapon-mounted light or flashlight
  • Pepper spray or knife* for non-lethal self-defense
  • Your concealed carry permit

*Note: Pepper spray, utility knives, folding knives, switchblades with a blade up to 1.5 inches and pocket knives with a blade measuring less than 3 inches are legal to conceal carry in Virginia. However, some knives, like dirks, stilettos, and daggers, still face restrictions.
