How to Apply for the Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit
Upon completing a Virginia Concealed Carry Permit Training Class with Piece Be With You, you will receive immediate proof of completion to apply for your Virginia CHP permit. We cover the application process in our training classes, but for those who need a refresher or have not yet attended a class, we’ve put together these easy-to-follow steps.
Applying for the Virginia Resident CHP Permit
- Register for and attend a Virginia Concealed Carry Permit Training Class with Piece Be With You.
- Download the Virginia Concealed Carry Permit Application (Form SP-248) or pick up a printed application from your local circuit court or sheriff’s office.
- File the completed application, along with the following documents, in person with the Clerk of the Circuit Court in your county or city of residence.
- Photocopy of valid photo identification issued by a Virginia governmental agency, the U.S. Department of Defense, or a U.S. passport.

- Self-addressed, stamped envelope for receiving the permit.
- The application fee of $50.
For county or city-specific procedures and accepted payment methods, we recommend checking with the Clerk of the Circuit Court in your county or city of residence.
Obtaining Your Virginia Concealed Carry Permit
The court has 45 days to either issue or deny the issuance of your Virginia CHP permit. Virginia concealed handgun permits are mailed by the Clerk of the Circuit Court after the application is approved.
If the court fails to issue or deny the issuance of your permit within 45 days, the clerk will certify on the application that the 45-day period has expired, and send you a copy of the certified application. This certified application serves as a de facto permit, which is valid for 90 days after issuance, and is recognized as a valid concealed handgun permit when presented with a valid government-issued photo identification until your five-year Virginia CCW permit is issued or denied.
If your application is denied, the clerk will provide written notice stating the basis for the denial and your rights to and requirements for requesting an appeal.
